STICKY FINGERS, TIRED FEET…
As a child, my favorite thing about Halloween was the candy. I’ve always liked sweets. In fact my best friend for the first twenty years of my life was cake.
It’s a thing.
I also fancied Trick-or-Treating. I remember the one-and-only-time our parents drove my brothers and me from our backwoods trailer park and uptown to the rich neighborhood. Once there, us kids crawled out of the back seat of our Oldsmobile with plastic jack-o-lanterns in hand and happily walked door-to-door gathering the best goblin goodies we’d ever seen or tasted.
Even as a kid, I loved those big houses, beautiful neighborhoods and kind homeowners opening their front doors to us kids. I appreciated seeing just how the other half lived. Up until that moment I’d only seen homes like those on television. To make that night even better, our jack-o-lanterns were filled up with caramel apples, Rice Crispy Treats, whole candy bars and homemade popcorn balls. One lady even gave us hot apple cider right there on her porch. Hot. Apple. Cider.
Who does that?
Those rich-neighborhood-treats were a far cry from the Milk Dudes, Chic-A-Sticks and stale Candy Corn we would’ve gotten in our trailer park. That Halloween was my favorite. Not because of the candy in-and-of-itself. It was because we went to a different neighborhood, saw new places and had a brand new adventure. Mama and Daddy were getting along. The night air was cool, the autumn leaves fell from the trees around us and everyone seemed genuinely happy. Even the adults. Even now I can mentally see the kind folks giving out candy and talking to us kids with patient smiles in their voices.
Reminiscing about the good old days of trick-or-treating made me realize a simple fact about human nature and the thoughts we think. Truth is, every thought we contemplate is either, “Tricking” or “Treating” our mind.
Let’s break it down:
To trick someone means to deceive or cheat them. Not good.
To treat someone is to give them a gift, meal or pleasant experience. Very good.
… ONE LAST HOUSE TO TRICK-OR-TREAT
Every thought we think is either working against us or for us. Our thoughts are either poor or rich. Our thoughts are either cheating us out of the life we want, or gifting us the full life experience we deserve. The real question is, are your personal thoughts “tricking” and deceiving you or, “treating” and supporting you?
Today, many of us are overwhelmed with endless, things-to-do lists that never seem to get done. Overwhelm breeds stress and anxiety. Did you know feeling stress is one of the ways we accidentally “trick” our minds into attracting negativity?
“Treating” our mind with good thoughts activates feel-good emotions, which often leads to inspired actions. I have definitely noticed that when I deliberately choose enriched thoughts on-the-regular, I generate a better, happier quality of life.
Over the years many of us have engraved our brains with deceptive thoughts which in turn tricked our minds into feeling bad. The good news is, we can easily transmute those trickster thoughts and start brand new patterns of treating ourselves with pure, positive thoughts. Consistently feeling good for the sake of feeling good takes practice.
Moving forward let’s agree to be more adventurous and curious. Let’s approach the rest of the year with childlike wonder and take our metaphoric plastic jack-o-lanterns and practice filling them to-the-gills with treats. Rich treats like, sweet thoughts, new supportive beliefs and heart-warming emotions that instantly hit that sweet spot that our mind, body and soul crave most.
On that note, I hope you have a lovely October and a perfect autumn. May this season be filled with caramel apples, self-love, eternal connection and lots of genuine friends. And, until we meet again remember to keep your thoughts, feelings and frequencies high, fast and pure so that you can Unlock the Universe within!
With Appreciation Always,
